4 – Bar Linkage Research

Terminology

·        Linkage: System of links connected at joints

·        Join: Connection between two or more links at their nodes, which allows motion to occur

·        Link: Rigid body that has at least 2 nodes where other links can be attached

·        Degrees of freedom (DOF): The number of input motions that must be provided in order to provide the desired output

 

Common usages in vehicles

·                  Simple steering systems

o   Go carts and trailers use a double four bar linkage system to steer

 

·                  Windshield wipers

 

·                  Suspension Systems

o   Mountain Bikes use a 4-bar suspension system
