Jigging Research

Jigging Research

Objective: Research methods to jigging a car. Potential resources including other Formula SAE teams and things I can find on YT.

Jigging is the process of creating structural supports to ensure the manufactured chassis is properly aligned and straight. A good jig ensures the chassis is built as accurately as possible to the CAD model.

The jig table is the structure where the MSXVI jig will be built upon. The model for ours can be found in Bild .

Limitations:

Considerations:

  • aluminum extrusions

  • pegboard

  • magnetic tab holder (fastener)

Pros / Cons

Aluminum Extrusion

Pegboard

Pegboard

dimensioning

  • control over precision

  • harder to accurately dimension

  • hard to move

  • fixed intervals

  • easy to dimension

modular fixtures

  • T-slot bolts, nuts, brackets

  • nut and bolt

modular workholders

  • workholder kits

Unsure what this is but useful for holding pipes. (tube clamp)

  • fibre boards (MDF)

    • need thicken boards, or use aluminum extrusions

    • laser cutting for fibreboards

Notes from MSXI

  • simply fibre boards are too weak because they were too flimsy.

  • choose both AE and MDF or just AE.

  • Matt used the metal clamps which attach to the holes on the boards

  • rear mdf boards were weak in this structure swaying left and right

  • Small holes in fibreboard are slots for the metal tube clamps to attach pipes to board.
