Overview

This page contains research on methods that can be used to finish and protect the exterior carbon fibre panels of the car.

****Work In Progress****

Composite surfaces are subject to weathering, including rain erosion, as well as other environmental damage. To protect the underlying plies, the finishing must be strong enough to mitigate potential damage from mechanical abrasion, UV exposure, and must provide a barrier for subsequent processes like sanding or paint removal (if applicable).

In addition to aesthetics, there are several technical reasons for painting composites. Among the most important is the prevention of fluid damage. Some resins are affected by prolonged water contact and freeze/thaw action can be damaging to the composite structure.

The goal of this research is to select the best option for our application. Various options will be explored and considered.

Possible (?) options researched:

  • Composite surfacing films

  • Composite Coating

  • Waxing

  • Paint Sealant

  • Paint Protection Film

  • Ceramic Coating
