MSXIV Chassis Teardown

Plans for salvaging steel tubing from the MSXIV chassis.

Tubes have been powder coated to prevent corrosion. This layer can be sanded off for any welding that may need to be done in the future.

@Kimberly Liu

Onsite working session (5+ people / 3-5 hours?)

  • can be done outside our bay or in the welding room (need to schedule times in calendar)

  • tubes can be stored at the back of the bay with other spare tubing, on the scrap metal shelves (if small enough), or in the bin with shorter 8020s

  • scrap can be dropped off at the E3 machine shop (talk to Rob Kraemer)

Tubes To Salvage:

Total number of tubes to save: ~58

General rule of thumb: keep tubes that are >50 cm and free of weld joints

  • feel free to keep/throw based on your judgement (try to prioritize the longer tubes), everything below is just a recommendation.

  • side note: we also have a couple of seatbelt tabs we didn’t use … not sure if these are worth keeping but it is possible to re-use them in future vehicles as long as they don't become super rusty

Materials & Equipment:

  • Angle grinder (welding room should have one if the one in the bay doesn’t work)

  • Dremel with cutting disc (for smaller sections)

  • PPE

Steps:

  • Start by removing major sections to salvage (yellow, green and blue sections below)

    • Yellow, green and blue sections can be broken down further (see images below)

    • note: if there are seatbelt mounts on the tubes you can try to remove them or just toss the entire tube

  • Remove individual tubes (in red)

  • Break down grey sections where necessary to make discarding easier
