Electrical & Interiors Sync | May 19, 2020

Meeting overview

These recurring syncs allow for the hardware/electrical integration and Interior teams to discuss projects and tasks that involve or require input from both teams.

  • Meeting Goals :
One is to determine which mechanical tasks/projects require additional work from interiors and the urgency of those tasks. Another is to give the mechanical team an opportunity to ask Interiors any questions and take time to discuss any present issues.

Next Steps

Front & solar enclosures (on top of the catamaran)
@Former user (Deleted) layout and design for lights
Battery box + wire routing on the catamaran to be figured out throughout the term
@Former user (Deleted) to figure out architecture, what is feasible and what is not for front lights
@Former user (Deleted) To look into physical buttons on steering wheel + horn mounting
@Jess Douglas Muir (Deactivated)@Catherine Cai To find an owner to build the front-end of the Driver display on the firmware team
@Kristen Emiko Shiozaki (Deactivated) get Firmware onto Figma for Driver Display & infotainment

Driver Display & Infotainment

  • Driver Display = right behind the steering wheel that has the speedometer, charge information. Running on Pi Zero

  • Infotainment System = An independent systems from everything is moreso for practicality and a nice to have (more of a software interface)

  • Infotainment System on Android Auto? Can run off of a raspberry pi with a mimic of Android auto - had problems previously with open auto

  • Question from @Jess Douglas Muir (Deactivated) : Has anyone gotten the Raspbery Pi for the driver display to accept CAN messages? (no one has answered this)

  • If the Infotainment is running independently, recommended to not connect Pis over wifi

  • Telemetry may not use ethernet and are currently testing over Wifi with ESP32 (microcontroller with bluetooth and wifi built-in), currently being worked on by Pei

  • Infotainment is an Acer 24” touchscreen monitor (will it work?)

Driver & Ventilation Fans

  • Hardware is powering them from the front-electrical enclosure (battery in there & board with connections for that)

  • Wires will run to wherever the fans are mounted, will be able to control up to 4 fans

  • Wiring from the front to the back of the car will be going along the side of the battery box to reach the rear of the electrical enclosure (the rear & battery enclosure need a slot for the wires to get through, same for the front with the dash)

Lights

  • Not much progress and is further along than mechanical (has boards + connections done, just need to figure out how to route the wires to the lights neatly)

  • Wire routing may need similar input to brake routing

  • For interiors, lights design is blocking elec

  • Motor controller cooling systems being worked on by Kevin

  • the mounting of enclosures (need a flat surface inside and need to know max dimensions for routing)

  • Power & thermistor wires are routing back from solar enclosure to panels

  • Each interior panel (x6) will have (12V?) cables that run the rear of the car, along the roof to the front

  • Pei is designing the boards, Nita worked on previous versions and will work on future revisions if any

  • Back and top light mount through the firewall

Horn Mounting + Steering Wheel Button

  • Elec doesn't care about the button as long as the cable can reach the steering board

Power Consumption of infotainment monitor

  • Powered from the DCD converter

  • 20W when active (aka displaying something)

  • power consumption of driver display monitor is unknown

  • Infotainment will not be displayed during competition and will only be for practicality purposes

  • Taking the screen out will probably be against regulations but we should be able to just power it off during the race
