Problem Breakdown

Background

The American Solar Challenge requires all solar cars to be equipped with 7 types of lights:

  1. Daytime Running Lights (DRL’s)

  2. Front Turn Indicators

  3. Side Marker Turn Indicators

  4. Rear Brake Lights

  5. Rear Turn Indicators

  6. High Mounted Center Brake Light

  7. BPS Fault Indicator

Each of these lights have specified colours, brightness, locations, and viewing angles as per the regulations.

Needs Statement

A need exists for lighting solutions which meet/exceed the specified regulations while maintaining good vehicle aerodynamics, minimal energy consumption, and good vehicle aesthetics.

Major Goals

  1. Have complete and functional lighting units

  2. Meets lighting regulations (ASC, and possibly WSC)

  3. Mechanically and electrically reliable & robust

  4. Minimally disruptive to vehicle aerodynamics

  5. Minimal power consumption

  6. Aesthetically pleasing

Requirements/Regulations

ASC Lighting Regulations

ASC Reference Standards for Lighting

ASC Visibility Requirements

Hardware Requirements for Lights

  • Aim to standardize LED spacing (pitch)

  • Designs should consider 4 LEDs as the “nominal” amount

  • Boost Controller

  • PWM dimmable via potentiometer

  • 100-500mA drive current
