Problem Breakdown
Background
The American Solar Challenge requires all solar cars to maintain specific visibility angles at all times. This includes rear vision that will allow drivers to see approaching vehicles 15 m behind and up to 30 degrees off-centre. In addition, the interiors team has also opted to include extra rear/sidewards vision to aid in driver awareness. Although no specific viewing angles have been set in stone, the goal is to provide increased vision for shoulder/blind-spot checking as well as to aid in parking manoeuvres.
Needs Statement
A need exists for rear/sidewards vision solutions which meet/exceed the specified regulations while maintaining good vehicle aerodynamics, good visibility for the driver, and good perceived practicality.
Major Goals
Have complete and functional rear/sidewards vision solution
Meets visibility regulations (ASC)
Mechanically and electrically reliable & robust
Minimally disruptive to vehicle aerodynamics
Good visibility for the driver
Good perceived practicality
