Our Mission

To design and build innovative solar cars that demonstrate the potential of renewable energy in a more sustainable future.

Our Story

Midnight Sun was founded in 1988 with the goal of building a solar-powered bicycle. Since then, the team has grown to over 80 members and has fielded 11 cutting-edge solar cars in international events around the world.

The team takes its name from the natural phenomenon that occurs in the Arctic and Antarctic, when the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day.

Currently, Midnight Sun is working on MSXII, the team's twelfth solar car and second cruiser-class vehicle. MSXII is expected to be complete by 2018.

The Challenge

The American Solar Challenge (ASC) and the World Solar Challenge (WSC) are multi-day competitions, where solar cars must travel over 2,400km across large sections of North America or Australia. Cruiser class solar cars are scored on both efficiency and practicality. Midnight Sun will compete against dozens of other solar car teams from universities around the world.

A Place For Learning

As a student team, we put great effort in providing a hands-on opportunity for students of all academic faculties. From conception to track testing, members can expect to gain key experience in CAD and EDA software, manufacturing processes, professional interaction – practical knowledge beyond the classroom setting.

Community & Outreach

Midnight Sun does more than just build world-class solar cars you will often find us educating and involving the community. You will often find us at tech conventions, university student events, elementary & secondary schools, and sponsor events. It is our hope that the work we do will demonstrate and advance the innovative use of solar power and other environmentally-friendly technologies down the road.
