Some ideas for attaching pot to pedal: (this image won’t rotate… sorry)

Requirements:

how to get accurate position reading?

  • rotary potentiometer

    • adjusts voltage output based on rotation, and combine with a PCB and power source to step up the voltage

    • to mount, create a mount for the potentiometer and connect the actuator to the point of rotation of the pedal

  • rotary encoder

    • provides signals to describe direction of rotation as well as magnitude

    • microcontroller

      • reads the signals and outputs a voltage based on the signals

    • PCB

      • takes the output voltages from the microcontroller and steps it up using a power source

How to provide force feedback in a pedal?

  • spring

    • is attached behind the pedal to apply an opposing force

  • master cylinder

    • naturally provides a little bit of resistance, though this is likely not enough

What is a master cylinder and how does it work?

  • has fluid inside causing a pressure increase once compressed, which moves pistons to activate the breaking mechanism

what angular range should we experience?

  • 20°

    • resting position of 30° to the vertical

what is the nominal load you should expect to apply with a foot?

  • 20lbs for accelerator, 50lbs for brake

How does angular displacement → linear displacement

  • having to rotating points allows for converting angular to linear displacement

    • (see rough idea image at the top of this page)
