Eric (Dec 4,10:41 PM):

Good Morning/Afternoon,

I hope you have been doing well. My name is Eric Zhao and I am the Battery Box Co-lead of the University of Waterloo’s Midnight Sun Solar Car Team.

To provide some background about us, we have been designing and building solar cars for over 30 years, and are one of the largest student teams on Waterloo campus. You can learn more about our experience at our website, http://uwmidsun.com .

We are currently beginning the design of our newest vehicle, MSXV, and would love to learn more about Nomura Co's technology! We would like to know if Nomura Co would be interested in working together and providing us with any lithium polymer battery datasheets, samples, or purchasing options. We would also be open to discussing custom battery solutions for our solar car if you have any interest in that!

Please let me know if you have any questions, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Eric Zhao | Battery Box Co-lead

Thanks contacting

MOV car main energy source is not solar panel.

It is energy from net.

But calculation is fixed battery energy density.

In case Panasonic, or Samsung 18650 has 230-250Wh/kg.

In case our Nomura race battery has 300Wh/kg (at 0.25C charge and discharge) .

Thus you can get 20% more energy by changing battery even same weight.

This makes big benefit.

Pricing is about USD50,000/80kg battery.

We have user team in US who use long years.

If you like to hear user voice, I can ask to them.

Eric (Dec 7, 2:50 PM):

Hello, thanks for responding. I was wondering if there are any other / smaller options for batteries? Our race requires a weight limit of 20kg for the battery. Would it be possible for your to provide me with any datasheets relevant to the batteries?

Thanks!

Nomura (Dec 7, 12:29 AM):

20kg is totally fine.

Even 10kg

Just I thought you are participator for MOV car.

And if MOV, batt carry weight is about 50-100kg if WSC.

I do not know in ASC

Anyway, 20kg is fine

if 20kg

Will be about USD12500 so on.

Eric (Dec 8, 1:28 AM):

Cool! When talking about battery, you mean just the battery cells alone, not a whole battery pack right? I'm interested in potentially purchasing some samples for testing, would you happen to know what the minimum quantity of battery cells you are offering to sell/ship to Waterloo, Canada?

I would also be interested in hearing from the US team that you've been working with. Would it be possible for you to ask them if they're interested in exchanging messages? Thanks!

Nomura (Dec 8, 9:25 AM):

We usually sell parallel connected cell with PCB.

Then it is quite easy at user when connect to in series.

According our experience,

Spot welding 18650is not easy.

But our battery parallel unit is very easy as soldering only.

If you go my page,

And my race team page Team RedZone.

Then you can see several video

You can refer it

I am just now boarding flight to Singapore.

Now I need switch off

Talk to later

Eric (Dec 8, 12:52 PM):

Ohh interesting, I'll take a look. Thanks!

My team has had some experience spot welding 18650s, and probably will want to continue doing the spot welding since it's a good experience for new members to try. We also would like to test and characterize the cells themselves before incorporating them into our battery pack. So I'm wondering if you are able to sell individual cells (not welded).

Also, what would be the price for a single 11 parallel connected battery unit with the PCB?

Nomura Email (Dec 8, 11:41 PM):

Hi Eric Zhao

Thanks you are interested in our race battery which ultra high energy density.

Here I introduce to you one of the best team,

who use long years our battery user,

and Mitsuba motor also.

Team Principia Solar Car Team!!

The contact person is Mr. Brian.

Brian Kamusinga <Brian.Kamusinga@principia.edu>

solar <solar@principia.edu>

You can ask the most of things as they have long years experience.

Thanks!!

Nomura (Dec 8, 10:15 PM):

11p arrangement is no problem.

Even 20p is ok.

Because 10p+10p by soldering is easy.

How many bare cells do you wish to have for test?

Stock is available.

But I need to check how much I need ask for sample + freight.

For the quotation,

Can I use following?

I found your team record in my record.

University of Waterloo - Finance

200 University Avenue West Waterloo ON N2L 3G1 Canada

TEL : +1 519-888-4567

FAX : +1 519-746-4791

e-mail : apinvoices@uwaterloo.ca

if fifferent,

pls kindly let me know

Eric (Dec 9, 3:55 PM):

I would be interested in purchasing one 11p arrangement as well as 8 individual cells.

For the quotation, I will have to check with my team and get back to you once I have it confirmed.

Since the holiday break is coming up, and we are in the middle of exams right now at the University of Waterloo, I might not be able to finalize the order until January 4th, 2022, once my university is back from our holiday. Is this okay?

Nomura (Dec 10, 12:58 AM):

Do you mean,

1st trial order 8pcs bare cell.

Then you confirm performance.

Then you proceed 2nd order some pcs of 11p?

Is my understand correct?

How many pcs of 11p unit you consider?

Eric (Dec 10, 2:13 PM):

First trial would be both 8pcs bare cell and also one piece 11p unit. Once we test them here, we'll decide how many more we would like to order. Do you have an idea of how much 8pcs bare cell and one 11p unit will cost all together? I'm still confirming with my team on the quotation details.

Also, is the nominal voltage of each bare cell around 3.6V?

Nomura (Dec 11, 3:55 AM):

I am going to check cost.

The mid voltage is 3.65V

good weekend

Ends with basically sending quotation which is attached at the top of this page. Seems to be way out of our budget currently (planning on budgeting around 3k-4k for the battery system of ~300 cells), no further communication has really been done since.

Email (KEISUKE NOMURA 野村圭佑 <nomnom13@yahoo.co.jp>, Dec 13, 1:15 PM):

Hi Eric Zhao

Pls refer enclosed quotation for the trial sample.

Thanks!!
