HipChat

We use HipChat, a chat client, as our primary form of team communication.

  1. Register an account at uwmidsun.hipchat.com.
  2. Join the General and Announcements rooms.
  3. Join your team's room - ElectricalMechanical, or Business
  4. (Optional) Download and install the native client.

Highlights

  • Rooms - Rooms are where chat generally takes place. Anyone can make a room. Public rooms can be joined by anyone, while private rooms are invite-only.
  • @mention people - Use @[name] to get someone's attention, online or offline. @here notifies all people currently available in the room, and @all notifies everyone in the room.
  • Native and web clients - HipChat has a web client. Alternatively, native applications can be downloaded for all major platforms.
  • JIRA integration - Mentioning a JIRA ticket (ex. ELEC-9) will attach a preview of the mentioned issue.
  • Video chat - Start video chats within HipChat, either from a room or a 1-to-1 chat. You can also choose to share your screen.
  • Emoticons - Use the built-in emoticons, or feel free to add your own.

Confluence

This is Confluence, the team wiki. Here, we document our projects, knowledge, and experiences.

Each team has its own space: ElectricalMechanical, and Business. Generally, these spaces will hold guides for getting started, meeting notes/retrospectives, and project documentation.

Highlights

  • Pages - Any content on Confluence is created as a page. You use the editor to create and edit pages, taking advantage of tablesmacros, and attachments.

  • Collaborative editing - Just like Google Docs, multiple people can work on a page at the same time.
  • Restrictions - Confluence supports comprehensive permissions management. By default, new members can only view pages. To gain edit permissions, please contact Titus Chow on HipChat.
  • @mention people - Similarly to HipChat, @[name] alerts the mentioned user that they've been mentioned in a page.
  • Inline comments - Comments can be made on a page level or inline, allowing you to provide input and ask questions.

JIRA

JIRA is an issue tracker. We use it to track tasks, issues, and progress.
