About the Team
Since its creation in 1988, the Midnight Sun Solar Race Car Team has challenged and pushed beyond the boundaries of solar-powered transportation.
As part of its mission, the team has continued to promote the research and development of sustainable energy technologies. Midnight Sun alumni have gone on to bring the passion and experience developed on the team to make real impacts in the industry.
Midnight Sun proudly represents the University of Waterloo and Canada at the American Solar Challenge. The event showcases the design and performance of solar-electric vehicles from universities and colleges around the globe and Midnight Sun strives to bring innovative vehicle designs to the world stage.
Our team is driven by highly motivated individuals with a passion for our work and an aptitude for learning. We take pride in the growth and development of our members, many of whom have gone on to pursue incredible opportunities at amazing companies.

What about you?
Our project scope spans most mechanical, electrical, and business aspects of automotive engineering, providing opportunities to students from all faculties to develop their skills and pursue their passions.
Interested in hardware or software?
Our electrical team is responsible for developing the system that handles power distribution and makes the car move.
Our focus is on building a practical, easy-to-debug, and resilient electrical system, taking full advantage of both hardware and software capabilities.
Interested in mechanical design or manufacturing?
Our mechanical team is responsible for everything from the roll cage, suspension, and steering, to the braking and aerobody systems. The mechanical team uses a variety of materials like carbon fiber and fiberglass to metals like aluminum and steel. Most importantly they design the mechanical systems in CAD, create kinematic models, and perform FEA on simulations.
Interested in business or UI/UX design?
Our operations team handles sponsorship, marketing, and budgeting. The team is responsible for more organizational duties, including public and industry relations, graphic design and media content, and planning complex race logistics.
We also have a page for team management, where the general administrative and financial pages are located for team leads to access.
