Powertrain Selection: MS 12
Goals
- Determine suitable requirements for electric motors and motor controllers
- Ensure adequate power and top speed without sacrificing efficiency and reliability
Background and strategic fit
We used NGM SC-M150 motors and WaveSculptor20 motor controllers in MSXII. Because of the uncertainties surrounding how long the motors have operated and how reliable they will be for races, it was decided to look into replacements for new motors. The Wavesculptor20 motor controllers are significantly larger and heavier than the newer generation WaveSculptors, so new motor controllers will also be looked into.
Assumptions
- We assume that because of how the chassis team and suspension team have made significant progress over the past terms, we'd like to stick with a wheel mounted pancaked shape motor
Requirements
# | Title | User Story | Importance | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Power | According to calculations, ~150Nm peak and >50Nm continuous torque is necessary | Must Have | |
2 | Form Factor | A pancake shaped motor designed for in wheel/hub mounting is necessary, and smaller motor controllers are necessary for reduced weight as well as easier mounting | Must Have | |
3 | Integration | Motors must be able to be integrated with the mechanical system of the vehicle, and sufficient brakes must be able to be mounted | Must Have |
