According to regulations set out for the 2017 World Solar Challenge, all lights on the solar car must be DOT/SAE/UNECE approved. This means that the LED strips recommended by ASC is no longer a viable option. Other cruiser class teams have adopted headlights from vehicles such as the Chevrolet Corvette C7 (Bochum), Ford Mustang (Sunswift Violet).

Headlights

It was decided that we were going to use headlights from a pre-facelift Tesla Model S (2012-2016). This was partially based on the fact that the pinouts for the pre-facelift headlight is readily available on Tesla Motors Club.  One headlight was ordered from eBay and tested. All current consumption figures are based on 1 headlight, and measured using a Fluke 117 Multimeter in amps.

Power Consumption Per Headlight

Current Consumption at 12V (A)
Daytime Running Light (DRL)2.320
Parking Light0.289
Turn Signal0.910
Low Beam9.3A Instantaneous, 4A Continuous
High Beam TBD

The low beam current was measured with a Fluke 337 337 Clamp Meter. The instantaneous current draw was measured by using the max function on the fluke. Further testing should be done using a shunt resistor to see if a capacitor can be used to supply this in-rush current.

Side Turn Indicators

We will be using two 3-3/16 in. marker lights as the side turn indicators.

Rear Turn Indicators and Brake Lights

We will be using four 4" Euro Red/Amber LED for the rear turn indicators and brake lights.

High Mounted Brake Lights

For the high mounted brake lights we have decided to use a 9-5/8 x 1 x 5/8 in. trailer light.
