Background

Sunpower is the primary producer of commercial silicon solar cells available to solar car teams worldwide. Almost every solar car team that uses silicon cells uses Sunpower cells of varying series (E66, E60, A-300). However in early 2019, Sunpower declared that direct orders needed to be a minimum of 1500 cells and smaller quantities had to be purchased through authorized resellers (first Sunnivatech, now Sol-Go). The company also went through a heavy restructuring in mid 2019, splitting into two companies. Manufacturing is now based in China as Maxeon Solar Technologies and the solar operations and maintenance division was sold off as NovaSource Power Services [1].

Other

As of March 2019, Sunpower has announced their Maxeon Gen 5 solar cells. These cells are 65% larger than the previous series. SunCat has noted in emails that they will not be working with Gen 5 cells for some time due to their larger size and they have not been in contact with Sunpower about them (as of October 2019).
