Slack
We use Slack, a chat client, as our primary form of team communication.
- Register an account at uwmidsun.slack.com.
- Join the
general
room. - Join your team's room - Electrical, Mechanical, or Business.
- (Optional) Download and install the native client.
- (Optional) Download the mobile app.
- Introduce yourself in the general or your team's room!
Note that in order to be involved in discussions, you must keep your client open.
By default, you will receive offline notifications only from mentions and 1-to-1 chats. We recommend leaving at least these enabled.
Highlights
- Channels - Channels are where chat generally takes place. Anyone can make a room. Public rooms can be joined by anyone, while private rooms are invite-only.
Clicking "Channels" in the left sidebar will bring you to a list of rooms and people. Here you can start a conversation with anyone, or join a group. - @mention people - Use @[name] to get someone's attention, online or offline. @here notifies all people currently available in the room, and @all notifies everyone in the room.
- Native and web clients - Slack has a web client. Alternatively, native applications can be downloaded for all major platforms.
Confluence
This is Confluence, the team wiki. Here, we document our projects, knowledge, and experiences.
Each team has its own space: Electrical, Mechanical, and Business. Generally, these spaces will hold guides for getting started, meeting notes/retrospectives, and project documentation.
Highlights
Pages - Any content on Confluence is created as a page. You use the editor to create and edit pages, taking advantage of tables, macros, and attachments.
Watches - You can watch a page or space to be notified whenever a change is made.
Note: We recommend only watching pages that you are interested in, as watching a space can result in many notifications. You can change what you'll be notified about here.Collaborative editing - Just like Google Docs, multiple people can work on a page at the same time.
- Restrictions - Confluence supports comprehensive permissions management.
- @mention people - Similarly to Slack, @[name] alerts the mentioned user that they've been mentioned in a page.
- Inline comments - Comments can be made on a page level or inline, allowing you to provide input and ask questions.
