This page is dedicated to the on-boarding procedure of Midnight Sun's co-op students.
Getting Started
Welcome to Midnight Sun! It is our hope that you have a successful workterm here with us. There are a bureaucratic things that you will have to complete before diving into your co-op term with us. As a general checklist:
- Visit our website at www.uwmidsun.com
- Join the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/uwmidsunmembers/
- Complete your Co-op Student Agreement form (Instructions below)
- Sign up on Atlassian for Confluence and HipChat
- Speak to your team supervisor for specific set up instructions
- If applicable, set up your uwmidsun email address
- Learn more about the vehicles
When you have finished the agreement form modules, please print out proof of completion, put all the documents together, and hand them to your project manager.
Co-op Student Agreement
The first thing that needs to be done is the co-op student agreement form, which can be found on sharepoint. (You don't have access to this site, the link is for your manager to get the form for you.) The form outlines the agreement to work under a student design team, and the training received to work here.
The co-op student needs to complete the following modules and training courses. Instructions on how to access and complete the three are on the co-op student agreement form.
- WHMIS 2015
- Online Safety Office Courses
- Engineering Machine Shop Training
Following the completion of these forms, the team lead should provide in-person training outlining the following main points:
- Tour of the bay
- Identification of safety hazards
- Safety manual points
After all the training points are complete, proof of completion and the agreement form should be handed in to Victoria by the second week of work.
Working Hours
We have flexible working hours, with core hours at 10am to 4pm. Your are expected to attend a 37.5 hour work week, which does not include a one hour lunch.
There are weekly team meetings, time and date depend and may change based on the current academic term. We ask that you stay late for these days to attend these meetings to provide updates and meet with the rest of the team. To accommodate the longer work day, Fridays are half-day. You are expected to manage your own time to meet the expected work hours each week.
Time Cards (If applicable)
Each co-op student has their own time card section on confluence, accessible only by you and your manager. Please fill out each card weekly as accurately as possible.
Here is an example time card. You are welcome to change it up to fit your preferences, but it's only purpose is to help guide your time management, and allow your supervisors to check up on your work.
Time Off
If you need time off for any reason, you are expected to discuss it with your supervisor. We don't bite.
