Background and Decision Making Reasoning

One of the major deciding factors for the solar array configuration was the reusability of the previously purchased MSXIV solar array. With that constraint in mind, previous documentation for the MSXIV array was gathered and dimensions were taken of the array. The solar array is split into sections called “Stacks” numbered 1 to 16. Each stack is unique in several senses. For instance, the stacks vary in size, shape, and mainly the stack pin/electrical tab location. Keeping the main factors of shape and size in mind, the MSXIV array was constructed in AutoCAD with the different coloured stacks in their former expected location.

To begin designing the MSXV array, we needed to reduce the 5 m^2 array size to 4 m^2 without the need to cut the pre-existing stacks. Note that each solar cell is ~12.5 cm x 12.5 cm. Using the area of a single cell to the total area of the array, each Midnight Sun vehicle required the following number of cells.

MSXIV = 320 Cells

MSXV = 256 Cells

With the number of cells needed for each vehicle in mind, we can achieve the 4 m^2 area for a challenger class vehicle by removing 64 cells of our previous array. Thus, different combinations of stacks that totaled the needed area where laid out. From there, 25 possible versions of the array configuration were made (with countless other possibilities). The resulting iterative process is displayed as follows.

Through the iterative design, the size of a potential canopy became more prevalent. Along with canopy size came the size of the occupant cell for a driver which helped in narrowing some of the options. Finally a streamline and aesthetic design that presented a good candidate for the upcoming vehicle was identified. This design was then compared to the rest, and proved to be the best for our case. That design is presented below.

Key Array Dimensions

Major dimensions for the solar array laid out can be seen below. Note that the layout will remain unchanged for the most part. However, modifications may be made later to provide regions for drivers to exit and/or a larger canopy if needed.
