The team has decided that we will be using MDF for our molds, now, the biggest issue is that we need to find suppliers for our MDF. Although we can just go to the store and buy it, there are many companies that will scrap their MDF if it is not in pristine condition and even though it isn’t good enough for them, it could be perfectly fine for our uses. This document will be a big pile of research as to what companies may be able to provide us with this “scrap” MDF.

disclaimer: I know that this is super rough and that and I may seem unsure at times, this is just rough and I’m getting a bunch of options and I’ll then research them!!!

Furniture/Cabinetry

Many furniture companies turn to MDF because this material is very practical and can be easily produced along with being economical. Using MDF greatly reduces their costs of manufacturing and production.

Possible companies:

Fire Resistance

Since MDF is quite fire retardant, many construction companies use it for certain buildings. MDF is known to be used in the construction of commercial buildings like stores and office buildings.

Possible companies:

Vapour Repulsion

MDF can be used as a vapour barrier/insulation for all sorts of buildings.

Possible companies:

Soundproofing

A lot of speaker manufacturers use MDF since it absorbs sound and prevents vibration inside the speaker casing. It’s also used as soundproofing in media rooms, walls of apartment buildings and offices as well as floor underlayment. Many contractors/building companies use MDF during construction.

Possible companies:

Roofing

It’s also used as roofing materials for low sloped roofs. So roofing companies? idk if pursuing roofing companies would be as viable as the others above this.

Possible companies:

Tradeshow booths and theatre construction

I have no idea if there are specific companies that actually specialize in only making tradeshow booths/theatre construction but if there is, I’ll list some but I feel like a contractor will do stuff like this.

Possible companies:

Commonwealth Plywood Distribution

This is an MDF distributor within Waterloo, they have over 100 options for MDF panels but only one is 1 inch thick, 😞 . On their website, they also list companies that they get their products from, the following are ones that specifically manufacture wood:

https://www.egger.com/shop/en_CA/ , they make wood products and they have “MDF moulding” which isn’t what we want but, since they use MDF as it seems, maybe we can get some scraps from them?

https://tafisa.ca/en, I don’t know if they use MDF for anything but they do make particle boards, I don’t think that can be used but they may have something?

https://www.uniboard.com/en, company makes a bunch of stuff, MDF included, they may have something for us.

https://www.formica.com/en-ca/, I think this company makes laminates, might have MDF, I don’t know.

http://premoule.com/en/, make countertops and cabinet doors, might have some MDF?

https://www.garnica.one/en, they make wood! maybe for us?

https://prestolam.com/fr/, they make stuff like countertops and cabinets, maybe use MDF?

http://www.huskyplywood.com/en/, they make wood!

https://boiseriesalgonquin.com/en/, they make stuff out of MDF!! might have scraps?
