Our Mission
To build solar cars that promote design, innovation, and teamwork amongst the students at the University of Waterloo and will further serve to educate the public on the applicability of renewable resources for a more sustainable future.
Our Story
The Midnight Sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs north of the Arctic Circle, when the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day - the ideal situation for a solar car.
Midnight sun was founded in 1988, with the concept of building a solar bicycle. Since then we have built 11 world-class solar cars competing in events around the globe.
Currently Midnight Sun is working on MS12 our second cruiser class vehicle projected to compete in 2018-2020.
The Challenge
The American Solar Challenge (ASC) and the World Solar Challenge (WSC) are multi day competitions, where solar cars much travel over 1,500 miles using only the power of the sun. Cruiser class solar cars are no longer scored on time and distance, but instead efficiency and practicality. Midnight Sun will compete against dozens of other University Solar Car teams from around the world.
A Place For Learning
As a student team, we put great effort in providing a hands-on opportunity for students of all academic faculties. From conception to track testing, members can expect to gain vital experience in SolidWorks, Altium Designer, Technical Manufacturing Processes, Professional Interaction, and Public Presentation Skills – practical knowledge beyond the classroom setting.
Community & Outreach
Midnight Sun is more than just building world-class solar cars – we are also about educating and involving the community. You will often find us at tech conventions, university student events, elementary & secondary school presentations, and sponsor events. It is the aim that our work and aspirations will inspire the economical use of solar power and other environmentally-friendly technologies down the road.
