What is it?

Shim simply refers to a thin sheet of metal, and is often used for small adjustments in geometry with bolted connections. It might be needed to adjust the alignment of control arms during dynamics assembly.

So why do we need it now? Poor design. Some parts were made to interfere when they shouldn’t have been, or were made too loose. As a result, we ordered some shim stock to use in specific location to effectively alter the geometry of mating parts.

Where on MSXIV?

  • Between the bearing cap and bearing housing on the LCA. This is in CAD. Essentially, the cap needs to be raised slightly to avoiding pressing down on the bearing. It should press on the LCA instead. As such, the geometry of the shim is fairly complex.

  • Between the bearing housing and the bearing on the LCA. There was too much slop left in this fit. We just need a rectangular piece of shim to wrap around the bearing. The bearing does not need a very tight fit here.
