Goals

  • Space frame vs composite frame discussion and brainstorm
  • What are the other big big system design decisions we need to address over the next month?
  • Quick update on team stuff
  • Discuss atlasssian framework

Discussion items

TimeItemWhoNotes
15 minsDefining monocoque, unibody, space frameall
  • Monocoque relies only on body (shell) for strength
    • Primarily seen on smaller F1 race cars and performance motorcycles
  • Unibody has an integrated frame and body that together provide strength
    • Most consumer cars use this
  • Space frame relies only on frame for strength, shell is not structural
    • Used by many race cars, sports cars, and older aircraft
9:20-9:46pros and cons of unibody and space frame

Manufacturability - space frame is better. focus was on repair ability

Sponsor- roll cage sponsor is potential. Textreme helped for composites but we would need much more

FEA - Unibody is hard to track stress points as opposed to space frame. As well composites are harder to be accurate with to a CAD model. As well composites are very brittle.

Weight - composites are lighter ideally, but space frame is more reliable (WSC is how efficient, not how far)

9:25weldingall
  • consider getting welding station
  • lauren knows people who may be able to give lessons
9:47Decisionall
  • space frame
10:00software thingsall
  • use Jira, confluence, HipChat. Feel free to add to pages
  • grabCAD should be considered for mehcanical
10:08new membersall
  • Minghao will be running seminars
  • Leads will speak to first year classes
  • Mechs will be running their own workshops
  • Mech will at some pont break off into teams to work on MSXI

Action items

  • Learn about space frame design
  • submit aerobody design ideas
