Seat and Steering Wheel Position Study

The following spreadsheet shows the seat and wheel position preferences of 25 participants. The Datum were the ground, in CAD this is the bottom of the seat mount, and the center of the parallel rear front chassis members (chassis members going across the car closest to the drivers feet). The data has significant human and measurement error however it appears to be accurate to within several cm. The first data section is the preferred distance from the front seat mount to the chassis member datum, the second data section is the preferred distance from the centre of the steering wheel to the chassis member datum, the final data section is the preferred height of the centre of the steering wheel from the ground datum. Histograms of the data are also included in the spreadsheet.

After analyzing the data it was decided to set the steering wheel at the average height and distance as there was not enough variance to suggest extreme discomfort by a significant percentage of the population if we had only one steering wheel position. We have also adjusted the seat and pedal positions to accommodate all but the 2-3 furthest outliers on either side of average.

The following is a schematic of the decided upon positions of the steering wheel and minimum and maximum seat positions.
