Chassis Tubing Material

Goal: Determine the optimal tubing material to be used for the chassis of MSXV

Key factors include:

  • Strength

    • Yield strength, fracture strength, stress-strain relationship

  • Weight

  • Cost

  • Required treatment

    • Ie. Surface coating, pre-treatment for welding, etc.

  • Manufacturability

    • Ie. Feasibility of welding / assembly

  • Availability from suppliers

NOTE: Both MSXII and MSXIV used Chromoly 4130 Steel for the chassis. Thus it is likely a good option but more research and consideration would be beneficial.
