Project Planning_2021.05.07_Spring Term Project Planning and Timelining Meeting

Meeting Agenda/Goals:

Decision-making_2021.05.13_Test Plans Review

Meeting Agenda:

  • Decide on what tests will be conducted for the common composite panel and adhesive testing

  1. Composites panel - Maciek

  2. Doors, B Bulkhead - Nikita

  3. Adhesive testing procedures - General Discussion + Decision

Design Goals:

  • Minimize number of testing overall

    • stick to less test standards

  • Minimize complexity

  • Minimize procedures, steps, variation

Design Constraints:

  • At the end, our goal is to compare with manufacture specification, so we need test data that can be compared with technical data sheet (TDS) values

  • It is okay as long as we have some type of procedure in place to get SOME kind of evidence

Test Plan Requirements:

  • how many test specimens

  • test specimen geometry

  • test procedures specifics

  1. Composite Panel Test

    1. 3-point bend test

    2. tensile test

    3. compression test

      1. Mark Griffet can’t do this (no explanation)

      2. we don’t want to design/manufacture one and don’t want to buy one since it is a specialized attachment to the machine

  2. Adhesive Testing

    1. Single lap shear test

      1. it is very possible! has been done by Tommy before

    2. Impact test

      1. Mark doesn’t have equipment; can’t use the lab

      2. Not feasible to conduct in-house in the bay without investing too much time or money to get the correct specialized equipment and setup.

    3. Peel test

      1. Mark doesn’t have equipment; can’t use the lab

      2. Not feasible to do it in-house

      3. Won’t provide any useful information because we can’t compose the test specimens using carbon fiber or steel

Action Items:

  1. Create test plans for May 20th

    1. Can have potential stage of review and feedback/improvements

  2. People will move onto test reports and FEA after done test plans (for remote side!)

Sync-Up_2021.05.20_Test Plans Review + Design of Experiments Introduction

Material Testing_2021.05.20

Meeting Agenda:

  1. Introduction

  2. Review test plans

    1. Need to account for resin infusion test specimen samples

    2. Things to watch out for:

      1. Test specimen geometry/specifications

      2. Test specimen quantity

      3. Fully detailed load configuration setup (reference ASTM standards)

  3. Material Testing Timeline + Things to Do

    1. Remote tasks while waiting for lockdown to lift

    2. Design Projects

    3. Simulation Work

  4. Design of Experiments

    1. @ Ishan would share his experience with design of experiments and statistical analysis.

      1. We would discuss if it is feasible to implement these professional approaches into our project while considering timeline and resource of members

  5. Decide on time for Material Testing Onboarding, May 29th afternoon

    1. Aimed to train current and new members

    2. Give overview of the material testing project

    3. Highlight skills that you would need to use

      1. Give training and advice of each skill

    4. Q&A

2. Material Testing Timeline

General Material Testing Timeline

End of May, 2021

Test Setup Preparation (Test Specimen, Test Apparatus, etc.)

First two weeks of June, 2021

Onsite Testing

Last two weeks of June, 2021

Simulation of Tests

End of July, 2021

Test Report

End of July, 2021

  • **Design of Experiment exploration

  • Simulation setup and procedures need further research

    • ACP-Post related

    • Need contact with Professor Montesano

Design Project-related testing would follow the same timeline milestone goals as shown above. But with more delayed due dates.

  • Seats testing plans

    • Hopefully mostly owned by Mech Co-ops

    • Would figure out better after June 2nd

3. Design of Experiments

Test batches

  • Mini tab

  • Repeatability

    • Could be just minimum 2

    • More randomized tests you have, the more accuracy and validity of your factor claims

  • Test batches

    • Measure features

    • Put it into mini tab

    • Look into software → understand the source as to why there isn’t enough accuracy in the parts.

    • We just need to know the factors that might be the source of the errors

  • **unsure of its applicability towards adhesives and its factors

  • Could be useful for future cars

  • Unsure of how it would be useful as testing

  • Design of experiment is looking for repeatability and accuracy

    • E.g. if you were trying to study why the geometry of your test specimen was not accurate

      • You input factors of your test specimen and understand why it’s happening

  • Design of experiment is based on part randomization

  • Quantity of test specimens

    • Composites ~100

    • Adhesive bonds ~50

  • Factors of each part

    • Composites

    • Adhesive

  • Might be worth creating an experiment in minitab

  • JMP is more powerful than minitab

  • Question: For accuracy (the aim) be measured in terms of material properties, e.g. yield strength, shear strength

    •  .

  • Factors?

    • Mistakes of factory workers, temperature, mistakes of the machine

    • The software just looks at the data
