Steering Design Report

Work term report was written on the steering system, up to date as of August 2020, changes from the report will be noted on this page.

  • Mounting solution for steering column will consist of two rod ends, 0.75” and 1” for the inner bore, with two mounting plates. The 1” rod end will be in place of the tilt mechanism. (Aug/Sept 2020)

Ackerman vs Anti-Ackerman vs Parallel

Inserted in there due to being forgotten in the report :(

  • As addressed in the report, Ackerman is a form of steering where the inner wheel angle will be larger than the outer wheel angle due to difference in tire curvature i.e. Si > So

  • Parallel is where Si=So, this was how horse carts were pulled in the olden days and produced a lot of tire slip due to the tire angles being the same while running on curvatures of different radii

  • Anti-Ackerman is where Si < So, this is used on racing vehicles due to the high speeds where the car’s weight will shift and the inner tire will see smaller vertical loads, thus impacting the friction force generated by the inner wheel. Anti-Ackerman is done to compensate for the decrease in grip, however, MSXIV operates at relatively low speeds, this geometry was not used.
