This guide will explain how the MS14 simulations should be set up to simulate the regulation impact scenarios.

There are 13 scenarios that need to be simulated:

  1. Front impact (bar)
  2. Rear impact (bar)
  3. Side impact (bar)
  4. A-pillar impact (wall)
  5. B-pillar impact (wall)
  6. C-pillar impact (wall)
  7. Side 30 degree impact (wall)
  8. Side 60 degree impact (wall)
  9. Front 30 degree impact (wall)
  10. Front 60 degree impact (wall)
  11. Top 30 degree impact (wall)
  12. Top 60 degree impact (wall)
  13. Top impact (wall)

Before you start ANSYS, you should have these CAD models ready

  1. Steel chassis
  2. Composite catamaran
  3. Impact objects (All 13 impact objects should be combined into one file for convenience)

ANSYS

  1. Import the geometries into the ANSYS workbench
  2. Import the line bodies for the chassis and create beam elements in DesignModeler → TUTORIAL: ANSYS - Beam Elements
  3. Import the surface bodies for the catamaran in DesignModeler
  4. Import the solid bodies for the impact objects in SpaceClaim, and make necessary changes to the model
    1. Here, all of the impact objects are combined in one model. In the simulations, we will suppress the unneeded objects instead of having a separate model for each object.
  5. Set up the catamaran geometry in ACP (Pre) → TUTORIAL: ANSYS - ACP (Pre)
  6. Combine the geometries of the chassis and the catamaran into one model
  7. In Mechanical for the chassis and catamaran, right click on Connections then Insert>Connection Group
  8. In your connection group properties, Face/Face, Face/Edge, and Edge/Edge should be all changed to Yes
  9. Right click on your Connection Group folder icon and then Create Automatic Connections
  10. Open your Connection Group folder and check if all the necessary connections have been made
    1. In this picture we can see that the front portion of the chassis has been connected to the front panel of the catamaran
  11. If there are missing connections, right click on Connections then Insert>Manual Contact Region
    1. I added a contact region between the bottom edge of the chassis to the edge of the catamaran
  12. Generate your mesh and then your chassis/catamaran is ready for an Analysis System
    1. Your workbench should now have 2 mechanical models, one with the chassis and the catamaran, the other with the impact objects
  13. Now you can add an Analysis System, connect the chassis/catamaran model and the impact object model to the Analysis System
    1. You will have all of the impact objects in your model, just suppress the impact objects that you do not need
  14. Add ACP (Post) after the Analysis System for catamaran analysis → TUTORIAL: ANSYS - ACP (Post)
  15. Now you can keep adding Analysis Systems and connecting both models to them (repeat steps 13 and 14)
