The Chassis and Internal Structures onboarding task is intended to familiarise members with basic Solidworks Weldments commands while developing skills to design parts with considerations in mind. The Onboarding is divided into 3 parts:
Chair
Rollcage Design
Full Chassis Design (Optional)
Once members complete the required tasks, they can be assigned and move on to working on different structures projects within the team.
Feel free to contact any of the leads when you get stuck! But… do try to figure out a solution by yourself - a huge part of learning SW is about playing around and finding out!
Part 1 : Chair
To familiarize you with Solidworks, recreate the following Chair using Solidwork Weldments:
If you are unfamiliar with weldments, refer to the following page for the Weldments 101 session and extra resources:

Part 2 : Roll Cage Creation
Apply what you learn and design around some constraints! Create a roll cage using SolidWorks Weldments and the model of the driver included here:
Constraints:
Must have hoop at the front and rear of the driver’s head
Cage must have 50 mm offset from the driver’s head
Deflection guards at the front of the roll cage to protect the driver from sides
Use the 4 given points in the file as mounting points for the roll cage
Once you are done, you are welcome to tackle the tasks we present during our weekly checkins!
Part 3: Full Chassis
For those who want to challenge yourself and prepare for more challenging chassis tasks, design a mock chassis!
Possible constraints:
Dimensions of driver (CAD model above)
Suspension mounting points
Wheelbase/track (distance between wheels)
Battery box location
Overall chassis dimensions
What else can you think of?
Honestly, it doesn’t even have to be a chassis for a solar car! If you can design chassis for a go-kart, a formula SAE, a baja SAE car, …a f1 car…? go for it! Show us you have the skills!
