Types of testing

  • Carbon fiber testing for I shaped panels: Goal: to find the best way to reinforce the joint

  • Fastener pull through strength

  • Adhesive

  • Shear out

    • see how much force it takes to completely shear/slightly damage out of the carbon fiber panel

  • In-Plane (Edgewise) Compressive Composite Failure Modes

    • Panel Shear Crimping

    • Face Wrinkling

    • Ideally this would be done on a test piece that has a hole for a bolted joint (in hand calculations it’s been assumed the test piece’s width is only the diameter of the hole for the bolted joint)

      • Then can more accurately determine how much loading will cause those two failure modes to occur
