What is noise/Intro to noise

Electric noise is a disturbance in an electric that causes changes in voltage or current, typically causing a small increase in the measured voltage or current. These are typically random and can be difficult to predict.

Types of Noise

  • Thermal Noise - Noise directly associated with the flow of electrons. Affected by temperature and resistance. Additionally, the range of frequencies will also have an effect of the amount of thermal noise

  • Flicker Noise - This is still a researched topic but it is also related to the frequencies of the components in the circuit

  • Shot Noise - Random motion caused by electron movement (unavoidable)

Known ways to reduce noise

  • Use shielded cables

  • Try to shield small components

  • Ground signal wiring to a common point
