To obtain an understanding of how and why our pre-charge system works, go to "Getting Started" > "Intro to Solar Car Electrical Systems" > "Intro to Motor Sytems".
Briefly, the motor controllers are what drive our motors and are directly connected to the main battery pack. The motor controllers contain capacitors that, when connected to our high voltage line, will result in massive inrush current due to the high voltage differential. This would cause arcing across the contacts within the relay, possibly welding the relay closed. To prevent this, a separate pathway through power resistors is used to charge the capacitors up to the voltage of the HV line. When this is accomplished, the relays allowing for a direct connection between the HV line and the motor controllers will close and the precharge path will be disconnected. The board also includes a discharge circuit that discharges the capacitors whenever the motor controllers aren't being powered.
Board is also used for interfacing with the motor controllers.
