Problem Breakdown

Background

Headlights are one of the requirements listed by the American Solar Challenge (however not required for the World Solar Challenge). For MS XIV, the headlight unit will contain two The American Solar Challenge requires all solar cars to be equipped with 7 types of lights:

  1. Daytime Running Lights (DRL’s)

...

  1. Front Turn Indicators

  2. Side Marker Turn Indicators

  3. Rear Brake Lights

  4. Rear Turn Indicators

  5. High Mounted Center Brake Light

  6. BPS Fault Indicator

Each of these lights have specified colours, brightness, locations, and viewing angles as per the regulations.

Needs Statement

A need exists for a headlight unit that meets the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and front turn signal regulations (ASC) lighting solutions which meet/exceed the specified regulations while maintaining good vehicle aerodynamics, minimal energy consumption, and is aesthetically pleasinggood vehicle aesthetics.

Major Goals

  1. Have complete and functional headlight unitlighting units

  2. Meets lighting regulations (ASC, and possibly WSC)

  3. Mechanically and electrically reliable & robust

  4. Minimally disruptive to vehicle aerodynamics

  5. Minimal power consumption

  6. Aesthetically pleasing

    Hardware Requirements for Lights

    • Aim to standardize LED spacing (pitch)

    • Designs should consider 4 LEDs as the “nominal” amount

    • Boost Controller

    • PWM dimmable via potentiometer

    • 100-500mA drive current
