Team Description

Our passion lies in applying the knowledge we learn in the classroom, to building a solar-electric car to push the boundaries of solar-powered transportation. We are currently one of the largest student design teams at 30-40 active core members and had over 500 new signups for the 2019-2020 school year. Beyond building a solar car, our underlying goal is to allow the University of Waterloo’s student body to expand their knowledge and skillset by working in a team environment to build unique vehicles. We have students in every engineering department, from systems design, mechatronics, computer and software utilizing their skills and knowledge to build this car.

We are designing a four-seater, solar-powered, electric vehicle for the American Solar Challenge (ASC), a 3000 km cross-continent solar car race. Last year with our car MS-XII, we were the first Canadian team to complete the ASC in the multi-occupant vehicle class. As part of our 31-year history, our team captured the 2004 World Record for the “Longest Journey by a Solar Powered Car." After repeated podium finishes at numerous races, our next objective to finish first in the ASC.

Who will this benefit?

Our key beneficiary is the University of Waterloo’s student body through expanding their knowledge and skillset by working in a team environment to build unique vehicles, but most importantly, building the best version of themselves through applying their academic learnings. Our team consists of having students in every engineering, math, arts and science faculties utilizing their skills and knowledge to build this car.

Our secondary stakeholders belong to the environment and the transportation industry. As sustainable energy becomes an increasingly important piece of transportation, Midnight Sun wants to keep striving and supporting such initiatives for a better place we call home.

The last beneficiaries include our community. Midnight Sun has and continues to complete numerous outreach programs to inspire others. Through visits to local schools, we look to inspire the next generation. Waterloo Open Doors and an electric vehicle roadshow for Evolv 1 looks to inspire visitors to the University of Waterloo’s campus.

How will this sponsorship benefit the sponsors?

We’d be more than happy to e-mail an in-depth sponsorship package. Different levels of sponsorships range anywhere from your company logo on our website, to a large logo on the final car and our team's apparel as well as a miniature model of our final car and plaque.
