How to make 3D printing less 3D printed looking

  • key point is: how can we smoothen out the surface?

Method

How-to

Pros

Cons

Sources

Sanding

  • will need different seams

  • after sanding, spray filler and spray paint can make the parts to look not like 3D printed

  • able adjust how smooth we want the surface to be

  • can be accurate in a way since we are sanding the parts that we want

  • could make a mistake of sanding to much

  • if it is a large part, time consuming to sand the whole part

Using Acetone

  • pour small amount of acetone into the glass that has paper towel in it

  • put the model inside the glass, and put a small fan in it so that the air moves

  • displace water around so acetone doesn’t leak

  • acetone will melt the 3D model

  • take it out, and dry the 3D model

  • acetone does its job to smooth our the surface

  • takes only about an hour

  • must be printed with ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

    • which gives toxic chemical when heated

    • shrinks when it is cold

      • not suitable

  • when doing this, could be dangerous since it is flammable

  • details can be gone

Using Spray paint / Spray Fast drying polyurethane

(thinking of sticking with this option)

  • spray paint (more than usual) then spray a layer fast drying polyurethane, fan it

  • do this multiple times

  • no need to sand the 3D model

  • the details might be gone

Shorter Layer height

  • set the layer height as a low number

  • no need to do an extra step of smoothing out the surface

  • time consuming

  • longer the time, easier for the machine to get jam and stuck

Heating

  • use a heat gun / hot air gun and along the surface of the 3D model

  • fast (I guess?)

  • able to choose parts to smooth it out

  • can change the shape entirely if it is too hot

Using brush on coating

  • brushing on to the 3D print

  • easy procedure

Fabric

Expand

Fabric

  • was thinking of light grey cotton fabric before

  • but now thinking of nylon

    • waiting for other information from other ‘fabric team’ member

    • thinking of sticking the fabric type as well and the similar colour scheme

Ways to attach Fabric

  • 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 4200 Fast Cure

    • a way to attach fabric on boats

  • contact cement

    • extremely strong chemical, might be to extreme

  • industrial velcro

  • any fabric glue

  • could even make a small gap on the cover and insert the corners of the fabric

    • must figure out where we want to put fabric

Padding under the fabric

  • could use a sponge foam role

  • something like foam floor tile

Keeping the fabric clean

  • could use hydrophobic and antimicrobial coating like how Google uses it for google homes

  • the cloth of the car seat can be protected by the fabric protecter – we could use this to the fabric on the cover
