MPPTs convert the high voltage generated from solar panels down to the lower voltage necessary to charge batteries.They compare the voltage output by the solar panels and the current voltage of the batteries to calculate how to convert the voltage output by the solar panels to the optimum voltage to have the optimum amperage to charge the batteries with.
MPPTs are required because without them, a lot of the power output voltage of the solar panels are lost as heat, or the voltage of may be insufficient to charge batteries or a large portion of the power from the solar panels may not be enough to charge the batteriescould be dissipated as heat.
