Project

Scope

Problem - Trunk Prop and Tilting

Functional Requirements

The assembly of components that make up the trunk prop and tilting system must:

  • Support the trunk when it is fully opened

    • Trunk weight plus force of wind on the trunk panel

  • Allow for the trunk panel to be closed by a user

    • Without requiring levels of force that would be harmful to the user or the panel itself

  • Support the ability for the trunk panel to be detachable

  • Tilt the trunk sideways when it has been detached

Non-functional Requirements

The assembly of components that make up the trunk prop and tilting system should:

  • Be easily manufacturable

    • Preferably in-house, but can also be done by outside suppliers

  • Present low risk and be feasible to implement

  • Be as user friendly as possible

  • Be as lightweight as possible

Problem Breakdown

Background

Expand

Headlights are one of the requirements listed by the American Solar Challenge (however not required for the World Solar Challenge). For MS XIV, the headlight unit will contain two types of lights: Daytime Running Lights (DRL’s) and Front Turn Indicators.

Needs Statement

Expand

i.e A need exists for a headlight unit that meets the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and front turn signal regulations (ASC) while maintaining good vehicle aerodynamics, minimal energy consumption, and is aesthetically pleasing.

Major Goals

Expand

i.e

  1. Have complete and functional headlight unit

  2. Meets lighting regulations (ASC and WSC)

  3. Mechanically and electrically reliable & robust

  4. Minimally disruptive to vehicle aerodynamics

  5. Minimal power consumption

  6. Aesthetically pleasing
