Problem

Problem Statement

The battery pack is the core of any electric vehicle, and MSXIV is no exception. The battery pack  is responsible for the energy storage of the vehicle.

Goals The battery pack is one of the most dangerous components of the car, as such, safety during operation will be the main focus of the battery pack. The battery pack is also one of the heaviest and time consuming (manufacturing) components of the car. Reducing each of these factors as much as possible will greatly reduce the work put into battery box.
Constraints Regulations
  • Must meet power requirements of MSXIV (TBD).
  • The battery pack must be connected in series with a fuse to prevent catastrophic failure.
  • Aiming for a 20kg weight reduction from MSXII's battery box (~80kg).
Criteria

Scope

Activity
Must have
  • SAFETY
  • Lightweight cell-to-cell and module-to-module connection.
  • Protection against cell failure to prevent thermal runaway.
  • Manufacturability
  • Electrical connections must be resistant against vibration
  • Economical
  • Proper cell configuration to prevent cell current overdraw and to maintain cell lifetime use.
Nice to have
  • Discharge curves of several different battery models.
  • MATLAB thermal model of the battery enclosure
Not in scope
  • Phase Change Material (PCM) as a thermally conducting material.
