Welcome to Interiors
Hi! And welcome to interiors. We're a small, diverse team responsible for the design, manufacture, and execution of MSXIV's interior. This includes everything from ergonomics to driver ventilation to interior material selection. If you are interested in designing good-looking, functional, user-facing products then this is the subteam for you!
If you're new here, this page should cover just about everything you need to get started!
Talk to you soon!

Meet the Team
As of the S2020 term (this term), we've made some more drastic changes to how teams are structured. Subteams will be lead by both a technical lead (responsible for the actual design and engineering work) and a project manager (PM for short, responsible for keeping the project running successfully and on-time). Individual projects within the interiors team (i.e dashboard design) will be assigned to interiors team members like you (also known as directly responsible individuals, or DRI's for short)!

How We Get Stuff Done
The interiors team uses 5 main platforms to communicate and distribute work:
- Slack is the main hub for all communication. Channels you should be a part are:
- #mech-interior (for all interior related discussion)
- #mechanical (for all mechanical team discussion)
- #general (for general team announcements)
- #meetings (where links for all meetings are shared)
- #cute-animals
- Confluence (what you are on right now) is where all general team documentation is stored
- Trello (https://trello.com/b/F7SdhEEB/mech-interior) is our short-term task tracker where work is delegated from
- Zoom (I'm sure everyone is well aware of what this software is now) is where our meetings are hosted from. The links to join meetings are typically shared in their respective slack channels and also in #meetings
- Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mTB05GdzoTxcDpE9awEW3MNa5lKMXUd1) is where other files are stored. Typically G Suite documentation like spreadsheets, slides, docs, etc.
Meetings:
There are 3 main meetings that occur during the week. The general meeting occurs every Wednesday evening and allows for the entire team to sync up on what is going on. Additionally, the interiors team meets on Wednesday evenings following the general meeting to review progress. We also meet on Saturday afternoons.
General Meetings - where the entire solar car team is present (Wednesdays at 7:00pm EST)Interiors Team Meetings - just the interiors team is present (Wednesdays at 9:00pm EST and Saturdays at 3:00pm EST)
In terms of overall workflow, most work is done independently but will have stakeholders/collaborators from other parts of the team. I.e the battery box cover is being designed by a DRI on the interiors team but will involve a lot of collaboration with the hardware and mechanical team. Work is typically assigned during the Wednesday meeting and then further discussed on Saturdays!
For all mechanical related work, we use Solidworks 2019 (note that there is no backwards compatibility, so make sure to use 2019). CAD files are shared via grabcad.
Problem
Problem Statement | Design and bring to manufacture an interior space for MSXIV which maximized the practicality score of the vehicle during competition while not limiting usability or comfort. Historically, solar cars have been an efficiency-first endeavor which does not put much precedent on the occupants' comfort. MSXIV's interior design shall strive to be a balance between form and function. |
Goals | Maximize practicality score at competition, increase ease in sponsorship, expand areas of interest for recruitment and maintain a user-focused design. The 3 pillars of interiors should be:
|
Constraints Regulations | Refer to ASC and WSC occupant regulations |
Criteria | 4-occupant vehicle Able to fit 95th percentile driver (modified rear occupants) Minimize cost Maximize practicality |
