Problem Breakdown

Background

Expand

Headlights are one of the requirements listed by the American Solar Challenge (however not required for the World Solar Challenge). For MS XIV, the headlight unit will contain two types of lights: Daytime Running Lights (DRL’s) and Front Turn IndicatorsMS XIV has 4 doors. It should be noted that the rear doors hinge from the rear (“suicide doors”) as oppose to from the front.

Scope

Expand

The doors project has a relatively large, all-encompassing scope which includes:

  • All 4-doors

  • Interior door panel design

  • Door hinge geometry and location

  • Door range of motion

  • Door latching mechanism and handles

  • Waterproofing/sealing of door to aerobody

The exterior design of the door (aerobody), structural aspects of the door (i.e side collision protection), chassis tube locations, and securing of windows have currently been completed by the aero-chassis team. However, the doors team should be very familiar with all these areas in the event of any changes that may need to be made.

Needs Statement

Expand

i.e A need exists for a headlight unit that meets the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and front turn signal regulations (ASC) while maintaining good vehicle aerodynamics, minimal energy consumption, and is aesthetically pleasingsafe, well-functioning, and well-fitting doors that provide for a pleasing interior.

Major Goals

Expand

i.e

  1. Have complete and functional headlight unitfront and rear doors

  2. Meets lighting safety regulations (ASC and WSC)

  3. Mechanically reliable and electrically reliable & robust

  4. Minimally disruptive to vehicle aerodynamics

  5. Minimal power consumptionEasy to operate

  6. Aesthetically pleasing

  7. Seals well with aerobody to prevent ingress of water and debris

  8. Easy to install and remove
